CHOOSING THE FLAGPOLE THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU

So you're in the market for a flagpole.
If you've been looking around, we're sure you've seen lots of options, heights and styles of flagpoles. All of the available information can certainly be overwhelming, but that's why we're here-to help you make a wise flagpole purchase that will suit your needs. Let us offer these helpful guidelines as you work your way through the maze of flagpole specs and colors. If you'd rather call us to discuss your situation, please feel free to do so. As we've already stated, we're here to help you.

HEIGHT

It's tempting to want to purchase the tallest flagpole available-is if a taller flagpole may, in some way, garner more attention or reverence from its intended viewer. But this isn't necessarily the case. Several factors determine the most appropriate height for your flagpole:

Line of Sight: Your flag should be easy to see. Consider your flagpole's surroundings and its distance from the viewer when determining how tall you want it to be.

Flag Size: It's a common mistake to install a tall flagpole that calls for a proportionally large flag and then, later on, opting for a smaller, less expensive flag. A flagpole and flag should be in good proportion to each other, so the ongoing expense of replacing the flag should be considered when the flagpole is purchased. Generally, the larger the flag is, the more it will cost.

POLE STRENGTH

Some flagpoles withstand extreme conditions better than others. The strength of our aluminum flagpoles varies based on the diameter of the pole's base and the thickness of the aluminum. Our fiberglass flagpoles are engineered to withstand 120-mph winds.

COLOR

Just as a building designer is careful to choose the colors of all materials used in construction, you'll want to think carefully about the color of your flagpole. Do you want it to coordinate with your facility's color scheme? Usually window and door frames are made of aluminum with the same finish. Lamp standards often tie in with the color scheme, as well. By coordinating your flagpole with your location, you'll avoid making the flagpole look like an afterthought. On the other hand, you might purposefully choose to make the flagpole a distinctly different color to make it really stand out. Whatever your aim, we have a variety of finishes/colors available, depending on the material from which your flagpole is made:

Raw, unprocessed aluminum is referred to as a satin or brushed finish. Several anodized finishes are also available, including: a clear anodized finish (i.e., natural), which looks much more like a satin finish but offers long-term color consistency and more protection against staining; several shades of anodized bronze finishes, which are popular in the building industry (with dark bronze being used most often); and an anodized black finish. Almost any color is available using a powder-coat process.

Fiberglass

The standard finish for our fiberglass flagpoles is white. However, these poles can be colored to any specification. And, because of the final clear-coat finish, the color will not peel, chip or oxidize.

SECURITY

Some flags and flagpoles are more susceptible to tampering than others. If you use an external halyard pole, the most practical deterrent is to position the cleat higher than the standard placement of 5' above grade. By doing this, the flag(s) cannot be removed without the use of a ladder or lift. Also, flags can be secured using internal halyard flagpoles with controllable access. There are two basic styles of internal halyard flagpole: rope-based and cable-based.

BUDGET

This factor affects every other. Shorter flagpoles are generally less expensive than taller flagpoles, satin ones are generally less expensive than bronzed ones, and so on.

If you're like many individuals, you may want a "real" one-piece flagpole. These are available from Tidmore Flags in the High-Grade Series Aluminum, the Value Series Aluminum and Fiberglass flagpoles, and we recommend them for the strongest, most permanent display. If you're looking for a less expensive option, however, the Sectional Economy Flagpole Sets are a better choice. The shaft of these sets is made of 2-inch aluminum tubing. They're not designed to withstand the rigors of commercial use, but they should last for many years. A final option might be to build your own flagpole. If you choose to go this route, we can help with hard-to-find components.
